Mary Ann Salvage
School of Ballet
Durban - Kwazulu Natal - South Africa
About

Mary Ann hails from Cape Town, South Africa where her initial classical ballet training took place privately with Ingrid Carlson in the Cecchetti method and with Jean Alexander in the RAD method. Mary Ann obtained her first ballet teaching Certificate, the Cecchetti Associate in 1980 through Ingrid Carlson.
After matriculating at Wynberg Girls' High School where she also did ballet as a school subject, Mary Ann spent 3 years studying and completing the Diploma in Ballet Teaching at the University of Cape Town, under the Faculty of Music. After graduating in 1982, she embarked on a career as a professional ballet dancer which spanned 11 years, where she performed all over South Africa for CAPAB, PACOFS and NAPAC as well as overseas in Germany, fulfilling her dream of dancing abroad. On her return to South Africa she continued to dance professionally.
After retiring from dancing, Mary Ann decided to pursue her childhood dream of owning her own ballet school. In 1994 she started teaching the RAD Syllabus in Johannesburg and moved to Durban in 1996 where she opened the Mary Ann Salvage School of Ballet. She subsequently completed her RAD Teaching Certificate under Denise Caro and by 1999 had attained the RAD Teaching Diploma in History and Anatomy.
Mary Ann has served as Chairlady of the RAD KZN Regional Panel, as well as been Vice Chair and Panel Member for many years. She has also been a RAD appointed Tutor. She has served as a Judge for the KZN DanceLink Awards. She writes reviews for Caroline Smart's ArtSMart webpage. She has also had training in National and Spanish Dance. Whilst a professional dancer, she was Company Ballet Teacher, Choreographer, Dance Captain and Repetiteur. Mary Ann also enjoys the challenge of choreographing and has choreographed for her own ballet school, the KZNDA, for various Operetta's as well as a Balletabend whilst in Germany.
Mary Ann enters her ballet students annually for various performances and dance showcases such as the National Creative Arts Youth Festival and the Durban Dance Foundation Bursary Awards, the RAD Fundraiser Rhythm And Dance, the RAD Graded and Vocational Graded Examinations, RAD Bursary Awards, AAB Performance Awards as well as the Natal Festival of Dance. She believes that in giving her students varied opportunities and preparing them as best she can, this allows them to become the best dancer they can possibly be.
"I am passionate about sharing the art of Ballet and dance to all who are interested in learning, sharing and networking with me."
